ICANN Open Forum

15 November 2009 - A Open Forum on Other in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt

Concise Description:
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN: An internationally organized, non-profit corporation that has responsibility for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domain name system management, and root server system management functions. As a private-public partnership, ICANN is dedicated to preserving the operational stability of the Internet; to promoting competition; to achieving broad representation of global Internet communities; and to developing policy appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.

The purpose of the open forum is to highlight ICANN’s recent work in areas related to new gTLDs, Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), and security and resiliency of the domain name system (DNS).

The forum aims at shedding some light on areas where extensive work has been achieved with respect to policy development, and a lot more is still underway in relation to implementation. Areas such as:

• Introduction of IDNs including a mechanism to “quickly” make this feasible in the country code space (Fast Track)
• Expanding the domain name space and opening the door for new gTLDs to enter into the root
• Ensuring security, stability and resiliency of the DNS and other Unique Identifiers in an environment of more frequent and more sophisticated attacks

Representatives from a diverse range of stakeholder groups will participate in the forum, with attention given to ensuring individuals also come from different regions. This will include but will not be limited to: those running country-code and generic top-level domains, governments, Internet service providers, Internet end-users, and technical experts.
