Legal Challenges Before Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs)

4 December 2008 - A Workshop on Critical Internet Resources in Hyderabad, India

The proposed workshop aims to bring forward the various legal issues and challenges that are facing the subject of internationalised domain names or IDNs across the world.  This aspect is extremely important as the next round of growth of the Internet is pertaining to IDNs. There are various legal issues and challenges that remain to be sorted out and be fully addressed before the entire phenomenon of IDNs can be called as a success. The proposed workshop will try to address some of the major issues raised by the following questions.  What are those legal challenges facing IDNs?  What are the complexities of these major legal challenges before IDNs?  How can these complexities be addressed today in the context of the Internet as it is growing?  What role can ICANN perform in the direction of legal enablement of IDNs?  What is the role of local communities in legally trying to regulate IDNs?  Other related issues concerning IDNs will also be sought to be discussed under the proposed workshop
